Porsche Road Trip Around Ireland
‘A hundred thousand welcomes’ is how the Irish have greeted visitors for centuries. A place whose hospitality, people and roads make you feel at home'
There's a good reason Ireland is known as the Emerald Isle. When you travel across the Irish countryside, you'll see greenery wherever you look, from the wide stretches of interconnecting fields to the undulating hills that provide abundant rainfall due to the unpredictable Atlantic weather systems that make landfall here. As they set out on their Porsche Travel Experience Ireland road trip, they had no idea how breathtaking, alluring, and enduring this colour would be. They were able to pick up speed for the first time as the participants got into their cars and drove out of Dublin, passing through villages with cottages, corner stores, and, of course, those renowned, vibrantly coloured Irish pubs. They also drove down country lanes drenched in a magnificent light.
Exploring the many greens of Ireland on a Porsche road trip
Ireland is said to have forty colors of green. This journey felt like they were seeing them all. In fact, they had the impression that there was much more. Emerald Green to Fern Green, Moss Green to Kelly Green — iconic Porsche hues all. This cascade of lush color is a result of the island's distinct climate.
There are so many different shades of green—whether they are found on precipitous cliffs, in the leaves of the trees and hedges that border the lanes we drive along, or in the verdant meadows where cattle graze—that lumping them all together under the term "green" would be far too limited.
How Irish Green was Ferry Porsche’s favourite colour
Irish Green is possibly the most significant colour for Porsche out of all the greens. It debuted on a late 356C model in 1964, marking its debut in use. It quickly became a popular choice for the new 911 and would go on to become one of Ferry Porsche's favourite colours. An intensely colourful shade that matched the country of origin. Having had multiple vehicles in his late father's preferred colour, Irish Green, Wolfgang Porsche has remained an advocate for the colour even today. In 2017, it was even selected as the colour for the one millionth Porsche.
Ireland's pubs provide a continual splash of colour against the white-washed homes and verdant surroundings of the Irish countryside. Frequently called for its current owner or former owners, their interiors are much more vibrant than their exteriors. In an Irish country bar, grabbing a bite to eat is a leisurely affair. It's an opportunity to experience the local flavours, whether they are found in the food or in the people who are chattering away at the bar, after a Porsche drive that whetted our appetites.
The topic of how significant the colour green is to Ireland comes up for all of who participated in the Porsche Travel Experience Ireland. The tricolor, the country's flag, has it. It's the hue of the three-leaf clover, or shamrock, which is a ubiquitous emblem of Ireland. Their renowned national rugby union squad wears bright green shirts that are strong, proud, and vibrant. Not to mention the green cabbage combined with mashed potato that goes into making colcannon, one of Ireland's most well-known traditional foods. Though it would be tempting to curl up with a large, comforting bowl right now, we still have a lot of driving to accomplish.
